REV. SAM CREECH ON LAW AND ORDER. The Charleston News and Courier of Monday published the following extracts from a sermon delivered at Cumberland Methodist church in Charleston Sunday night by the pastor, Rev. Sam Creech, who is well known here The Rev. Sam D.

Creech preached on "Law and last evening at the M. E. Church. The text was taken from the first verse and thirteenth chapter of Romans: "'Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God." Mr.

Creech said among other things that many people held that "religion is religion" and that "politics is politics," and that there was no reason that they must conflict, but the principle is wrong. The idea that the right to vote and the holding of office were things of privilege and not matters of duty to God, has brought about the unpleasant state of affairs that prevail in the city and the nation today. It is the duty of these people to speak, and it is the duty of the citizens to vote according to the dictates of his own conscience, and not because he has been influenced to vote. The people must overcome the practice of buying votes and vote honestly for the men who have the ability and the honesty to go to the Capitol and make laws that would protect the poor and keep the Government clean. Mr.

Creech advocated higher pay for legislators, arguing that only poor men, with little business ability, or ambitious young lawyers were about the only ones who would be willing to leave their business for forty days for a salary that would barely pay their expenses, serving the country for the honor attached to the position is a thing of the past, and there must be something more in it. Mr. Creech stated that he could pass the doors of twentyfive gambling hells and "blind tigers" within a fifteen minutes' walk from the church. He said that he could hardly call them tigers," for their eyes were wide open, and that "oneeyed" would be more appropriate. Mr.

Creech said that he would make no charges, but would ask: "Do the City Fathers know of these, if so, how can they notify them to close their doors on Sabbath Others besides this city is affected, and in the future, instead of asking the politician "'how do you stand on the liquor question?" he thought that it would be better for the country if the candidates would state how they stood on the religious question, and what had been their religious experience.
