My writing… German football clubs, with the exception of Schalke 04 who are still toiling with a €30m, comparatively high, debt mountain which could see them lose their licence and end up relegated again, this time by default to the fourth tier, in contrast to Ligue 1 and La Liga, managed their own way out of the Pandemic crisis. The venture capital deals have backfired on the Spanish and French leagues that have taken them. 50+1 is sustainable and German football clubs are capable of managing themselves as solvent ongoing businesses that compete well enough in European competition and provide for a good national team set up. Fair ticket prices and fan participation are what counts. That’s where Bundesliga has it nailed. But yes better marketing is neeed to show just how good the Bundesliga as a product really is. The DFL, which is headed up by Hans-Joachim Watzke, BvB’s joint CEO, who i have met on several occasions, have concluded to pull out of the proposed sale of media rights today. Back to basics again, the Bundesliga, including BvB, membership model is what I have campaigned for, and written about, over the past over ten years. We now newly have a football regulator in England from next season, what can we, and other leagues learn from the 50+1 membership model? There will always be a place for investing in clubs, and there is still a risk from the European Super League 2.0 which could yet upend the way of doing football, but for now absolutely delighted at this decision. Also to have played my part in looking at the pro and contra views with Bloomberg and share the view of German fans with them as I have been seeing them. Thank you to Bloomberg’s David Helier for the very intense dialogue in recent weeks: https://lnkd.in/duSyEe2G#benmcfadyean #bundesliga #germany #50+1

What is happening in football? It has become winner takes all. And the winner is the Premier League and by "all" we mean "America." For many in the US, the Premier league is world football. How far is the Premier League pulling ahead of rival European leagues? This far, says today's FT: "The Premier League has cracked the US. While its domestic rights may be faltering, England’s top division currently pulls in £1.8bn per season for overseas broadcast rights, including £333mn in the US. "This completely blows its European rivals out of the water, and is a key part of its £2bn per season advantage over its nearest rival in annual broadcast revenues. "Such a gulf explains why when Norwich City finished in last place in the 2021-22 Premier League, they earned more broadcast revenue for their league appearances than Bayern Munich, AC Milan or Paris St Germain, the German, Italian and French champions. "The Premier League’s pulling power is so great that across the whole of Europe only Barcelona and Real Madrid made more money from televised league games than England’s bottom-ranked team, with the result that the biggest clubs on the continent now increasingly find themselves outbid on transfers not only by fellow giants but also by Premier League minnows."#premierleague #tvrights #TV
