JUST IN; SuperSports Won’t Broadcast AFCON Due To Unsecured Tournament RightsMultichoice’s SuperSport will not broadcast the 2023 AFCON tournament after losing the rights to a rival broadcaster. In a statement, Multichoice confirmed, “SuperSport Channel will not broadcast the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023…because the channel has not secured the rights to broadcast the tournament.”However, it noted the games “will be available through our partner broadcast stations on Free to Air (FTA) channels”This comes after New World TV, a Togo-based network, secured an exclusive three-year deal with CAF to air all its competitions across 46 African countries until 2025.This is the first time an African broadcaster has obtained exclusive AFCON rights, ending SuperSport’s long-running monopoly. The statement assured that multichoice “remains committed to ensuring football fans across Africa continue to enjoy unrivalled access to entertainment and football games.”However, the loss of AFCON rights is a major blow after they had broadcast every edition since 1992. Fans now face uncertainty over where they can watch the games. The 2023 African Cup of Nations, known for short as the 2023 AFCON or CAN 2023 and for sponsorship purposes as the TotalEnergies 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, is scheduled to be the 34th edition of the biennial African association football tournament organised by Confederation of African Football. The tournament is set for January 13-February 11, 2024 in Ivory Coast.WhatsAppFacebook Twitter EmailLinkedInReddit

MUST READ: TNT Sports agree four-year deal to broadcast FA Cup from 2025-26 season: The Football Association has agreed a four-year deal with UK broadcaster TNT Sports to broadcast the FA Cup from the 2025-26 season.TNT will share rights with a free-to-air broadcaster, whose identity hasn't been announced yet but will be confirmed at a later date. In the current deal, both the BBC and ITV share rights to show the competition with all games free to the UK audience.TNT Sports will showcase live matches from the first round, with every game from the third round outside of 3pm kick offs on display through to the final whilst selected matches from every round will be available free-to-air, and highlights of every game will be made available free on YouTube. In addition to the Emirates FA Cup ties, TNT Sports will also broadcast the English football season’s traditional curtain raiser, the FA Community Shield, and the FA Youth Cup semi-finals and final. They join the Vanarama National League, which TNT Sports also has the rights to in a long-standing commitment. The FA Chief Executive, Mark Bullingham, explained the decision behind pay walling a chunk of the FA Cup fixtures.“The Emirates FA Cup is our crown jewel, and it helps us to provide vital investment across every level of English football, supporting clubs, communities, facilities and the wider grassroots game." he said in a press release.“TNT Sports are an outstanding broadcaster with an impressive record of showing some of the biggest and best sporting events around the world, so we are delighted to be working with them on our shared commitment and long-term vision that will ensure the Emirates FA Cup continues to thrive over the coming years.”In a rather controversial move, the FA has opted to paywall matches from the oldest football club competition in the world in order to earn and utilise more money to invest in English football's future.Whilst it is wildly unpopular with the fans, it does showcase just how quickly the whole sport is being monetised, and unfortunately just how little say the fans get in having their desires met when it comes to free access to watch football. The post TNT Sports agree four-year deal to broadcast FA Cup from 2025-26 season appeared first on Soccerscene. #Football #Soccer #FootballNews

Peak Soccer?“From the 1990s to the eve of the Covid pandemic, football was in a long boom. The marriage made in heaven between pay-TV and live football in the early 1990s brought vast sums of money into the sport, and, for the following three decades, every time the broadcast rights were up for auction, the winning bid was higher than the last. When Sky first won exclusive rights to broadcast live Premier League football in 1992, it cost them £38mn per season. Seven auctions later, they paid £1.8bn per season for the 2016-2019 stretch, a 40-fold increase. It was the same story right across Europe, and this reliable and effort-free source of revenue growth quickly became an implicit assumption in football clubs’ planning. But then the pandemic hit, and broadcasters reassessed. No domestic TV rights package agreed since 2020 for any of England, Spain, Germany, Italy or France’s top leagues has set a new high, even in nominal terms.”Source: FT#snapshotsthatwow

So debate has been flowing around the value of the #FIFAWWC rights and whether FIFA is just posturing or are broadcasters devaluing the event. There's other factors to consider, i.e. appetite of advertisers, timezones, and the shifting role of FTA, but there seems to be a big gap between both sides of the equation. Are FIFA bluffing? Is FIFA+ a viable home for it? Lots to consider, but Minal Modha broke it all down for us.https://lnkd.in/eydcEkBF
