Aside from Zombies, COD has sometimes done spec ops missions - shorter, co-op missions with some light story elements... IIRC they did this in last year's MW2 most recently.

Im super confused at where we are now with Call of Duty.

Is Modern Warfare 3 the most recent one?
Are the new Modern Warefare games remakes of the old ones or brand new entities in that "franchise"?

Is this the one with the terrible throwaway single player mode or am I thinking of a different Call of Duty game?

It's the second sequel to the 2019 Modern Warfare which is a full reboot not a remake and the campaign picks up from where MW2 (2022) left off while MW3 is considered one of the worst campaigns in the franchise. Not sure why they didn't just start with or include the first two games so people can get caught up on the campaigns so since this looks like a push to boost MP numbers I'm probably passing on this one

The last batch of Modern Warfare games are prequels to the original MW games from the 360 days.

As for this game - it was originally intended to be DLC to Modern Warfare 2, but Activision is gonna do Activision things. I actually skipped out on it since I typically just play Warzone. Ever since that game dropped, the yearly game has basically just become a vessel for players to unlock weapons, skins and camos in MP mode so they can then be used in Warzone.

Thanks guys,

I might download it to check out the PvP multiplayer but not gonna waste my time on the rest of the package.

There is some catalog CoD single player games I want to check out (mainly advanced warfare and Infinite Warfare) but I'll kip this one.

Yeah the campaign has been pretty generic, with the same kind of missions you've played in other COD campaigns, including a couple of sneaking missions, a sniping mission, air superiority missions, and ubiquitous military shooter levels. This time around there are a couple of open ended levels that are larger in size and very much like Warzone, where you loot around for equipment and weapons and have to complete objectives around the map. Meh.

The multiplayer has been pretty good this time around, with some mechanics that have helped make it faster paced (like slide cancels). They basically took the last game and improved upon people's complaints. I will say that MW 2019, MW2 (2022) and MW3 (2023) are all very good, easily accessible COD games for the general public from a multiplayer standpoint.

If you want to get more competitive, I've really been enjoying the ranked mode, and the eSport is fun to watch as well.

Advanced Warfare and Infinite Warfare are among the "Jetpack CODs" IIRC (which as the name implies, has more mobility than the "boots on the ground CODs". One of them had the actor who played Jon Snow in GoT... Their campaigns weren't bad, but the multiplayer could be hit or miss depending on how much you enjoy games like Titanfall. The wall running was pretty fun though, but it's not for everyone...

In recent memory, the one with the terrible throwaway single player mode IMO is COD: Vanguard. The campaign was comprised of a set of short stories and the game was set once again in WW2. It's the only COD campaign I haven't finished since COD: WWII

As mentioned above, these are Reboots of the original Modern Warfare trilogy, but the stories aren't exactly the same. You'll definitely have some of same story beats though, and as I mentioned, similar missions. Some of the characters and villains are also the same, such as Price, Soap, Ghost, Makarov, etc. However, some of the additional characters in this new trilogy are more intriguing and add a bit more ethnic representation, such as Farah or Vargas

I kinda wish they got a bit more creative with the naming, but these days I guess if anyone is talking about the the MW series, it's going to be the new ones. I generally refer to the original Modern Warfare as Call of Duty 4...

Actually now that I think about it IRRC I had actually played a bunch of Modern Warfare's 3 multiplayer at a friends house and I remember thinking it was pretty great so I will definitely download this one for that.

The JetPack COD's are where they really lost me (for multiplayer anyways)... I never purchased any of these games but for a while I'd download and check out the beta...
The one that really turned me off the whole series was a Black Ops game where you could choose characters and wall run and there was a person with a bow and arrow as a special ability and I just hated everything about it.

Back in the day though Modern Warfare 1/2 were some of my most played Xbox 360 games. I know they've been ripped off and iterated on 10x over but back then they were new and interesting and super fun.
I also played a bunch of World at War too but that always felt like a B tier game compared to MW1/MW2, all though getting attack dogs as a kill streak perk was pretty sweet.
I never got into any of the Black Ops games for that reason (I alway assumed that was the "B" team), Call of Duty Ghosts was the last actual Call of Duty game I bought and played through, I actually enjoyed the single player of that back when it launched on Xbox One/PS4 but the multiplayer by that point already felt really bad....

These games are hard to keep track off... They are like if Madden or Fifa had different names every year.

They should just call the new one Call of Duty 26 or whatever its at.
