Rubel was a native of New York City. He attended Fay School and St. George's and graduated from Harvard in 1926. He received his master of arts degree at Harvard in 1929. In 1934 he was appointed an associate of the Fogg Museum and an associate of the Asiatic department at Harvard College.

At Harvard, Mr. Rubel founded the Rubel Asiatic Research Library, a collection of records, photographs and books on Asiastic art and architecture.
