A survey of Super Mario Bros. ended in Luigi narrowly pulling ahead of Mario and saw the popular dinosaur Yoshi overtaking both of the titular plumbers in votes.
A team from Cribbage Online commemorated the upcoming premiere of The Super Mario Bros. Movie with a survey asking fans to name their favorite character from the original video game series. Data was taken from digital media company Ranker, which gathered answers from over 87,000 respondents. The final tally showed Luigi earning second place with a total of 5,771 votes, slotting him 169 ballots above Mario's final count of 5,602 votes. Therapoda Yoshisaur Munchakoopas, better known by his nickname Yoshi, additionally managed to surpass the brothers in the poll, with the green dinosaur receiving 6,084 votes and securing the top spot in the overall ranking.

Toad and Bowser Jr. also seized spots in the poll's top five, with Toad securing fourth place with 5,514 votes and Bowser Jr. trailing slightly behind the attendant of the Mushroom Kingdom with 5,229 votes. The survey additionally included more notable characters in the rankings such as King Bowser and Princess Peach, who earned 4,817 votes and 4,727 votes, respectively.
Luigi's Rising Popularity
While he's historically found less mainstream appeal when compared to his iconic sibling Mario, longtime fans of the Super Mario Bros. franchise have taken a shine to Luigi in recent years. This was likely in part due to several spinoffs such as the Luigi's Mansion series, which fleshed out the plumber's character and established his anxious and scaredy-cat demeanor. Despite his nervous nature, players have grown to admire Mario's brother for his loyalty, with fans commending Luigi for his willingness to go against his cowardly tendencies in order to help Mario and their friends time and time again.

Aaron Horvath, who co-directed The Super Mario Bros. Movie, previously explained how Luigi's personality made him the perfect character to play the role of the damsel-in-distress for the film adaptation. "[Luigi] takes the Princess Peach role in our story," Horvath said. "It's Mario's goal to save his brother from Bowser's clutches. He has to go on this epic adventure to do that. So Luigi, who's a famously nervous, anxious character, finds himself in the worst possible predicament: having to survive interrogations with Bowser and make it through that gauntlet."
The latest Super Mario Bros. title, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, is available exclusively for Nintendo Switch. The Super Mario Bros. Movie jumps into theaters on April 5.
