going up either tuesday or thursday morning and fishing all day that day and all day the next day. looking for anything. i just want some action and i'm tired of the city lakes. No boat so it will all be from shore. i have a cabin which i'll be staying at on columbine lake but i want to go for some bigger fish. I've never fished the three lakes and was wondering where when and what to use. any kind of trout would be nice. cook them up for dinner and bring one or two back.

as the masses will say after me... fish the shadow mtn. spillway with wax worms, mealies and nightcrawlers.... also use pink tazmanian devils cast into the falls and current. you will get into fish this way.

also, the dam area and canal if pumping is good for suckers, stockers and the occasional kokanee salmon.

fish the canal between shadow mtn. and grand lake with jerkbaits such as rainbow x raps early in the day, you'll get into hefty browns that are working the weedlines.

monarch lake also is a surefire bet for some brook trout, fish along the dam on the bottom with nightcrawlers.

granby will be good if you got there early and fished rainbow bay, also the bays where the creeks dump in will be good as well for trout looking for an easy meal. I have heard things about cutthroat bay being productive as well.

hope this helps.

just got back from granby, if you want action and numbers you cant go wrong fishing arapahoe bay at the roaring fork inlet. The lake is so high right now that the normal spots arent reachable from shore. I probably caught 10 trout in about two hours, smaller but got a couple 15 inchers and sure there are bigger ones if you have the time. Worms worked great and gulp power bait wasn't bad. Just get down behind the tent camping spots about 15 feet downstream from the bridge and cast out into the natural channel you'll see highlighted by the submerged trees. You'll probably lose some tackle as it's pretty narrow but I was hooking fish before my bait hit the bottom on occasion. Midweek you have a great shot at getting to the spot before someone else and if you have questions talk to the campsite supervisor, he's a really cool older man. Think his name is Brian?

The inlet on shadow mountain that goes under the highway is a good area to shorefish. On granby, the steep shoreline along the road leading up A-bay might be a good spot to try for lakers. If you like to hike, you could hike downstream from shadow mountain to the inlet at granby. The fishing has been outstanding there but again it is a decent hike along the river so check the map and make sure you are up for it.

I will be out on granby most of the week chasing lakers.Im overdue for a hog and determined to get one.

schmiley, what kind of fish are in the columbine bay inlet? I have hiked it (it's not as bad as you made it out to be, hahaha) and it looks mad promising, especially with the high water. what would you suggest using there?

thanks in advance. I might try this place soon.

Goon,
Rainbows and browns are all over the flooded areas of the inlet.Alot of the fish you see rising are on the smaller side but there are much larger ones lurking the area too.Usual stuff for the bows, my favorite is a little blueish/white glow in the dark blue fox or kastmasters in varrious colors. For the browns they seem to like my small crankbaits.I use little jointed sinking or suspending rapalas mostly. I have not seen one in the tackle shops I visit but one in a brown trout pattern should slay them. The browns seem to like the rocks and when the crankbaits bounces off of them sometimes. I dont fly fish but id bet that would do very very well seeing so many fish feeding on the surface.I have not personaly caught or seen any kokes in there yet but I have not targeted them eighther.

The hike isnt bad at all imo, but after taking saltyfresh and culinarypunk down there just before ice out and hearing about it still to this date, I figured best to suggest checking a map over someone else's oppinion of a short/easy hike :P

Went fishing thursday at Twin, Friday at Grand and Saturday an Granby. Caught a small lake trout at twin jigging. My step-dad caught a couple decent lake trout jigging at Granby. I had a ton of fun at grand lake because when we pulled in the stocking truck was there. My dad and my buddy kept trolling deep looking for lake trout off the down rigger, but I just trolled a fire tiger rooster tail with a red hook (my new favorite lure) at about 10-12 feet and caught 4 rainbows trolling. We pulled the boat in and casted around the dock for a bout ten minutes and got bites every single cast on rooster tails. I love stocker rainbows! They fight and jump like hell, but are dumb as a brick.
