Dodgers Week 5: Major league debuts & more series losses (2024)

LOS ANGELES — Though the final impression of last week for the Dodgers was a 10-0 blowout in which just about everything click, the team still struggled mightily at home over the last week, dropping series to both the Nationals and Mets.

“I think it’s just a bad week, I really do,” manager Dave Roberts said Saturday. “But with that, even with bad weeks, we usually find ways to carve out a couple of wins. This week, we haven’t.”

Sunday did get a second win for the week for the Dodgers, but it was a long process to get there.

Batter of the week

Shohei Ohtani led the way, with 10 hits in 21 at-bats, including a home run on Sunday that passed Hideki Matsui for most in major league history for a player born in Japan.

The big three of Mookie Betts, Ohtani, and Freddie Freeman had a .481 on-base percentage last week, while the rest of the Dodgers had just a .273 OBP.

Pitcher of the week

Tyler Glasnow had his worst start of the season on Monday, giving up six extra-base hits and six runs while under the weather. But he recovered and then some on Sunday, striking out 10 with no walks while pitching eight scoreless innings, the first Dodgers starting pitcher to even see the eighth inning since July 2022.

Miscellany

Welcome aboard: The Dodgers had three major league debuts last week, all during the series against the Nationals. Relief pitcher Ricky Vanasco debuted on Monday, outfielder Andy Pages started his runway in the outfield on Tuesday, and Landon Knack started on the mound on Wednesday. They were the second, third, and fourth MLB debuts for the Dodgers in 2024, joining Yoshinobu Yamamoto on March 21 in South Korea. Vanasco, Pages, and Knack were the first Dodgers to debut on three consecutive days since Greg Hansell, Todd Williams, and Noe Muñoz from April 28-30, 1995.

Knack allowed two runs in the first inning to take the loss, but settled down and got through five innings in his debut. He said he got a few hundred messages of some kind after his debut, spread over text messages, Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook.

“The floodgates opened,” Knack said. “Everyone I know from back home and everywhere I’ve kind of connected with reached out.”

Series of losses: The Dodgers lost all three series on the homestand, dropping two of three games to the Padres, Nationals, and Mets. It’s the first time the Dodgers lost three series on the same homestand since June 13-26 2011, though that was a four-team homestand in which the Dodgers were swept by the Reds, lost two of three to the Astros, won two of three against the Tigers, then dropped two of three to the Angels.

There have been some very bad homestands in between, like going 0-7 on a single homestand in 2017, which was such a bizarre season that saw the Dodgers set Dodger Stadium records for both home wins in a season (57; since broken) and consecutive home losses (nine). But before this week, the last time the Dodgers lost three series in a row on the same homestand was from May 12-22, 2005, then they lost two out of three to the Braves, Marlins, and Angels. To put that in perspective, the Dodgers have had 54 homestands with at least three series since the start of 2005 (50 homestands had three series, four had four series), covering 20 seasons.

The Dodgers have one more long homestand this season, hosting the Mariners, Rays, and Orioles from August 19-29.

Up next

After a week and a half at home, the Dodgers hit the road for the remainder of the month. First up is running the Jayson Werth gauntlet this week against the Nationals in Washington D.C. and the Blue Jays in Toronto. Looks like three opposing left-handed starting pitchers are on the docket this week.
