This month, our local Partner Business Resource Group - Women Optimizing in the Workplace (WOW) got fired up about servant leadership! Angela, a passionate card-making whiz, led a fun and informative session on the topic. Not only did we learn valuable leadership principles, but we also got to channel them into action by creating cards for Cards For Cubs, a charity that brightens the days of kids and young adults in foster care. Alison Sirkus Brody and I have facilitated Understanding Unconscious Whiteness in Philanthropy ten times! The workshop series has taken many different shapes: we've held it in person, on Zoom, as a half day experience, as multiple full days experiences, and so on. It's been an amazing and iterative learning process, and we're still improving on it!Regardless of the format, here's what we've seen our participants come away with:Big picture: They deepen their understanding of the systems of white supremacy and reflect on how those systems show up in themselves, and in the philanthropic and nonprofit settings they work in. Past participants have shared how transformative this work has been to their understanding of why some behaviors are problematic or harmful, and how to take different (more liberating and equitable) actions.Some of these different actions can include:- Direct grantmakers streamlining and simplifying their grantmaking processes, offering more unrestricted funding, intentionally seeking out a more diverse pool of potential grantees, and building stronger relationships with their grantees and movement leaders.- Board members and organization leaders exploring specific ways to share power within their organizations, show up in solidarity with their staff, and cultivate humility.Past participants have told us they felt more equipped to engage in conversations around race, racialized capitalism, the racial wealth gap, and power, which is pretty huge, in and of itself.They've also told us, time and again, how powerful it was to do this work within a cohort where they can build relationships with peers across organizations. They befriend folks who share their commitment to racial justice, when they may feel alone in that commitment within their own organization.I can't wait to meet the next groups of philanthropic changemakers who join us in this work. Nonprofits provide critical leadership in so many areas of our society. Whether fighting for the rights of the disadvantaged, sheltering those experiencing homelessness, providing cures for diseases, or caring for animals -- nonprofits provide a backbone for some of the best work of humanity.And yet, nonprofit leadership is unique -- and managing nonprofits is messy. Most nonprofits really on shared leadership between staff and volunteer boards. The good intentions of everyone aside, it's simply not enough for board members to come to the table with the desire to “give back.”That's one lesson I've learned from Joan Garry, a champion for nonprofit leadership. Joan is the past executive director of GLAAD and co-chaired the LGBTQ Finance Committee for the Obama 2008 Presidential campaign. Today, she's the founder of the Nonprofit Leadership Lab, an online resource offering content and community to board and staff leaders of small nonprofits who can afford neither coaching nor consulting.When she joined me on Coaching for Leaders earlier this year, she showed us how to get alignment between an executive director and a board. Here are five key points that came out of our conversation:1. The relationship between an executive director and board chair is critical. Shared leadership provides more opportunity than hierarchy.2. Many type A people are in leadership roles. Clarity on who decides what is key. Type A people don’t operate well with ambiguity.3. Get alignment on one thing at a time to simplify the decision-making progress. Use a recent example as a catalyst.4. Executive directors should encourage boards to think and work at altitude so they get beyond risk management.5. DEI - diversity equity inclusion; DEIB diversity equity inclusion, and belonging; IDEA inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility - no matter which acronym you prefer it is an important topic. Over the past 20+ years, I've been professionally involved with nonprofit organizations working towards positive social change. It's been fantastic to see a growing focus on inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility among nonprofit staff in recent years.The commitment to creating a more inclusive environment by these teams is truly inspiring!However, I've observed a bit of a gap. While staff at many organizations are actively participating in conversations, trainings, and taking action to make their organizations more accessible and equitable, I rarely see the same level of participation from boards of directors. It would be more impactful if the leadership of these organizations was also involved in this critical work especially when it comes to hiring practices.I'm curious to hear your thoughts. Thanks to his positive outlook and wonderful support system of family, friends and co-workers, he successfully navigated this significant life change, returning to workin the investment industry months after his accident.What led you to join the Leaders Program and then the Board of Directors?"I was very fortunate to have been able to return to my career and at the time it was incredibly important for me to re–establish myself within my profession. I was also constantly weighing an inner calling to push myself into advocacy – but I did not know where to start. So, I joined the inaugural BACKBONES Leaders Program in 2020, being frustrated that people with similar injuries felt lost and disenfranchised from real life opportunities.What I loved about the Leaders program was its structured curriculum. We had a series of influential speakers who opened up and shared their personal experiences as advocates for the disability community. Ideas started flowing through my head - How can I do more? Who can be a resource, a mentor for me? How can I be a more effective advocate?Thanks to the Leaders Program, I'm better positioned to be a more effective advocate.
