Dispelling the Meat Meal Myth

"Fresh Lamb." "Whole Chicken." "Deboned Whitefish." These "wet-state" protein sources sound great, but, may in fact be a marketing tactic.

AAFCO label rules require ingredients to be listed, in order, from heaviest to lightest. Wet-state proteins contain approximately 70% moisture, making them heavier than their dry-state counterparts. This allows grocery and mass market pet foods the ability to place meat at the top of their ingredient list. In reality, meat is not the main ingredient in these foods.

Meat meals are made through grinding, cooking, and drying meats into a granular powder. This makes the moisture content about 15%. When a whole meat meal is listed as the first ingredient, you can be assured that it is really the largest ingredient in the food.
